Hello Chief Nation! My name is Dan Lundak and I have been teaching at Sauganash since 2004. I have taught reading, writing, language arts and social studies. This year my focus is 7th grade Social Science with integrated Writing and 8th grade Civics/Social Science with integrated Writing. I am excited to be teaching a new curriculum and the thought provoking discussions it will develop with our students. I love teaching at Sauganash and I am lucky to teach with a talented group of professionals. Before Sauganash, I taught in Denver Public Schools at the 5th grade level, all subject areas for three years. Teaching is a second career for me. Prior to getting my Masters degree in Education from National-Louis University, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology, with a minor in English from Loyola University-Chicago. I worked in the Telecommunication and Information industry post attending Loyola. It took me a few years to discover teaching is where I am meant to be, but thrilled I get to learn something new each day.
Learning and growing is what I encourage students to do on a daily basis. I have tried to model this behavior over the years by applying for grants, fellowships, educational travel opportunities and professional learning communities. I have been lucky enough to be awarded many opportunities such as Fund for Teaching Fellow, Gilder/Lerhman grants recipient, and the WWII Museum fellow. These groups have exposed me to in-depth learning and fantastic teachers from around the country and also allowed me to travel to places like, Springfield, New Orleans, England, France and other historic destinations. This summer I will be going to Germany and visiting many WWII sites with 20 teachers from around the country with the WWII Museum based in New Orleans.
When not working, I have many passions and interests. You can find me looking at new recipes and cooking for my family four or five nights a week. I love to see their faces when I have made something that they love to eat, especially when they did not think they would like it...can you say squid? I also love to travel to new places in Chicago, the Great Lakes, and around the world. Having the opportunity to travel with my wife and two sons brings me great joy. You can find me on the tennis courts April- September and the Platform Tennis courts October-March. This is a great chance for me to socialize and get some exercise at the same time. I cheer for the LUC-Ramblers in basketball, the Nebraska Cornhuskers in college football and the Chicago Cubs for baseball.
